Wow! Look what I found! A vintage backup set!
As I was looking into that junk drawer that we all have, I stumbled upon this 100 MB zip disk. it’s hard to imagine that all of my WordPerfect files, QuickBooks, Quicken & Lotus Organizer & 123 files all fit into this disk back in 1998.
You are probably asking yourself, why did I mail my data to myself? Well, it was back in 1998, when who knows which hurricane was approacing Miami, and prior to the storm hitting, I did backup, and mailed it to myself.
The strategy behind this?
Very simple. I already have my famous 3 legged stool backup system in place. This is just another precautionary or contingency plan, in the event that for some odd reason the 3 legged stool system didn’t work. The reality is, what if my office got leveled, I have no internet for weeks within miles, etc. At least in this way, during the storm, my backup was also in a secure location within the US government since I happen to have a PO Box.
Regardless if you have a PO Box or not, when you mail your backup via FEDEX, UPS or USPS, its in transit and chances are your data will be secure. I would insure the package sent and make sure someone has to sign for it. Needless to say, precautions must be taken by adding a password to the media, etc.
Whats your backup strategy?
